To work in the front office of an investment bank whilst being passionate for my family and children has always been one of the hardest struggles in my career. Many times, especially during years when none of my colleagues had a wife or children, I found myself at the point of nearly giving up this profession. Much of my energy was devoted to 'surviving', and so I questioned what difference I was making as a Christian in such a family hostile environment.
A few years ago things changed when I set up a company network together with a couple of colleagues. We believe that family matters for good work! An environment that recognises the different needs employees face when they go through different stages of their life (parenting, schooling, teenagers, care of elderly dependents ...) attracts good talent and commercial success. I was surprised how many colleagues (including 'savvy traders') subscribed to this principle or responded positively and immediately expressed how they were struggling to make their family life work. Through speaker events, networking groups, panel discussions and several other initiatives we create opportunities where all these family-related, very practical needs (which have a direct impact on work) are raised and discussed.
It is a privilege to be blessed with success at work. It is an even greater privilege to be able to influence a culture by promoting values that count in God's Kingdom.
